She also knows how it endangers the most precious human relationship of all—the one we have with ourselves. Diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2004, today she is cancer-free. Hers is a success story. She fought breast cancer with all she had. And, she won. Melissa took her personal battle out of the shadows and into the public eye when she appeared on the 2005 Grammy® Awards. Having lost her hair from chemotherapy treatments, she took the stage to sing a cover of Piece of My Heart. Never once showing any signs that cancer had taken her musical prowess or her relentless spirit and drive, the performance showed us a Melissa newly empowered by her fight. It also served as her on-stage initiation rite into a sisterhood of women donning the battle scars of the war against breast cancer. Melissa’s bravery breathed new life into the battle of thousands of women and subsequently opened the door for her music to help make a difference in the fight.
About I Run for Life Ford approached Melissa in 2005 about recording a single to serve as an anthem for the fight against breast cancer. The result, I Run for Life, is a song written and performed by Melissa that describes her own experience with the disease and also the experiences of every woman who has ever been touched by breast cancer. "I wanted to make it personal, climb into people’s emotions and portray a woman who has gone through breast cancer. The first verse is about a survivor. The second verse is from my own experience. The last verse I wanted to offer to those who have not been diagnosed or have known someone affected. We’re all running for answers and to make the situation better." Proceeds from I Run for Life will benefit two charities dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. The single is available exclusively through the iTunes Music Store for .99 cents. Record royalties from the single’s inclusion on Melissa’s upcoming album, Greatest Hits The Road Less Traveled, will also benefit breast cancer charities.
